Wondr at Work

Feb 06, 2023

I always say how much I love helping individuals and teams meet their magic.

Sometimes I joke and say 'We're bringing wonder back'.

So, what do I mean by that?

Most people wouldn’t describe their workplace as ‘magic’ or ‘wonderful’, right? Instead, we tend to see our work as something we do to pay for our ‘real lives’ outside of the workplace.

What all team success stories have in common is that each team-member feels that they truly belong, that their unique talent is appreciated, and they are collaborating on something bigger than themselves.

That’s when real synergy occurs: when a team is truly more powerful than the sum of its parts. Often this is experienced as flow and ease.

What does wonder have to do with this? Not what you might think!

Most of us associate awe and wonder with nature and mystery encounters; being swept away by the grandeur of a place like the Grand Canyon, or spotting a shooting star. When working with groups at Wondr, we focus on creating spaces where we cultivate the neglected interpersonal dimension of wonder:

1. Collective effervescence

Collective effervescence is the experience of spark and harmony that happens when people bond over shared purpose and its sustaining, unifying energy.

There is a joie de vivre which manifests when we share moments with others. If you’ve ever stood in the first row at a concert of an artist you love, you’ll know what I mean. When moments like that can then guide you and your colleagues to a common and mutually articulated goal, that is the type of group bonding that is transformational.

2. Appreciation and moral beauty

To inspire the best in people at work, recognition and appreciation are top of the list. Nothing else comes close—not even higher pay, promotion, autonomy, or training.

We experience wonder when witnessing other people’s courage, strength, or talents, and when being witnessed and celebrated for our own. Everyone’s a winner when each individual can show up entirely as themselves and be celebrated for the unique genius they bring. This is our moral duty to one another, which, when nurtured, is in itself worthy of marvelling at.

3. Epiphany

When teams drop into a space of connection and belonging, a field of possibility opens. From having spent ten years designing and facilitating transformational group work, I know how to create potent containers in which magic occurs: a sense of mystery, of ‘je ne sais quoi’, that can’t be seen by the human eye, but is felt by everyone in the room.

This is what galvanises realisations that fall like dominoes towards innovation. This is epiphany, and its likelihood of happening depends on how intentional we are about it.

In and from the right space, true possibility and synergy is palpable in a team.

That is what I mean by ‘helping people meet their magic’. I’m sure you can see why I love it!

So how exactly do we do it? We have many tricks up our sleeve and can work with you to create programs or one-off events at any scale and within any time frame. Just contact us to find out more.

Most people complain about tired formats for staff meetings, work retreats and team events, leaving people feeling uninspired, unseen or worse, excluded. It's time to reshape meetings and events and create a more supportive and energising environment for teams.

Let’s end the idea that positive work culture is all about perks and happy hours and look at the things that really light people up.
